    How Long Is Pixies Concert?

  • The Pixies are an American alternative rock band that originated in Boston in the year 1986. The original formation of the band was Black Francis as the vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Kim Deal as the bassist and vocalist, Joey Santiago as the lead guitarist, and David Lovering as the drummer. The Pixies have been performing for many years and have become idols of sorts, and their music has inspired many bands in the alternative and indie rock genres. In terms of the duration and length of Pixies performances, supporters are able to watch and listen to the band for around 1.5 to 2 hours with great energy.

Initially, the Pixies were not known to deliver spectacular shows that lasted for hours and hours. In some of their early club gigs and warm-up acts in the late 80s, their performances could last only 30 to 45 minutes. This is quite reasonable given that they were only getting themselves exposed at that time and have not yet produced a large amount of material that they could perform. However, it did not take long for this to grow and diversify, not only in their discography but also in their live performances.

It wasn’t until the Pixies toured in support of their second album, Doolittle, in 1989 that the band’s shows extended to about an hour or so. This is comprised of such popular songs as “Here Comes Your Man,"  “Monkey Gone To Heaven,"  and their most famous song, “Where Is My Mind?”. They were also touring more, with their music gaining considerable fame in countries such as England and the Netherlands. The extra stage time enabled the Pixies to incorporate new songs and other popular songs for their increasing global audience.

When the Pixies reformed in 2004, after the band had been dormant for 11 years, one thing was sure: their shows were going to be longer. It’s fair to say that by this stage, the Pixies had enough songs from their four studio albums to create a full-scale concert. Their warm-up shows ranged from 60 to 90 minutes long, as the comedians enjoyed practicing onstage again. When they finally started a full-fledged world tour in 2005, most of the Pixies’ performances had over 30 songs in the set and two hours in length.

Over the years, Pixies concerts have remained on the same path concerning the length of their concerts. Despite not having released any albums since Indie Cindy in 2014, they have been known to take long sets in recent times with songs from the old catalogue, obscure tracks, and covers. A Pixies concert lasts roughly between 90 and 120 minutes, with more than 25 to 30 songs per performance. When encore breaks, audience interaction, and mini sets between venues such as The Ryman in Nashville are included, some performances last approximately 2.5 hours in total.

When fans prepare to go watch a Pixies concert, one thing they can be sure of is that their money will be well spent in terms of time. Below is a general outline of what to expect:Below is a general outline of what to expect:

    • Main Set: 95–110 minutes
    • 25–30 Songs Performed
    • A Collection of Big Hits, Popular Songs, Album Cuts & Obscurities
    • Encore Break: 5 minutes
    • 1-2 Song Encore: 5-10 minutes

So overall, one can estimate that the Pixies’ headline show is somewhere between 100 and 120 minutes of meat-and-bone American alt-rock. The first shows were primarily composed of short explosions of what would become the band’s distinct loud/quiet formula and bouncy, identifiable tracks. However, as the albums and the tours accumulated, so did the set lengths, much to the appreciation of Pixies enthusiasts. Unlike other bands that slow down and limit their concerts as they grow older, the Pixies remain the same, wild and uncontained as before.

However, one should not forget that there are rules for everything in this world. Smaller events, like festivals or one-off shows, may take slightly less time. The Pixies also change lists frequently and play unexpected covers, so the concomitant concerts are never identical. Whether at a European festival or your local amphitheater, though, you are almost guaranteed to get more than 90 minutes of the Pixies’ hit song list. It is rare to find bands that can perform at this level of consistency and endurance even after years of forming.

So the next time the Pixies come to your town, you know you get a long set topped off by their classic hit “Where Is My Mind?” that has become their encore. Not many bands can proudly claim that they have been consistent in their ability to provide long concerts. It may be loud, chaotic, and cathartic, much like the Pixies themselves and their music. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes because, when it comes to concert duration, at least the Pixies have more than enough fuel left in their tanks after 35+ years. A tenure of enjoyment that begins from early childhood through late adulthood is expected each night for these two groups of fans.
