When Is Pink Floyd On Tour?
Pink Floyd is listed as one of the greatest and most famous rock bands in the history of music. The band was formed in 1965 and they managed to record music for more than a decade, which makes them one of the most successful bands in the history of the world. However, the band has not toured since 1994, after their final studio album, The Division Bell. Audiences always ask themselves if Pink Floyd is going to reunite and go on tour again.
Original Band Members
The basic formation of Pink Floyd was Roger Waters (bass and vocals), David Gilmour (guitar and vocals), Richard Wright (keyboards and vocals), and Nick Mason (drums). This is the lineup that recorded such masterpieces as The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Richard Wright died in 2008 and he cannot be present for a reunion of the classic lineup.
Roger Waters Departure
The conflict started in early 1980s when Roger Waters began to differ with the rest of the group regarding the future direction of Pink Floyd. Waters left the band in 1985 after participating in the recording of ‘The Final Cut’. He embarked on a solo project while Gilmour, Mason, and Wright remained active in making music and performing under Pink Floyd. The rest of the band members had success with records such as A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. Nonetheless, Pink Floyd was never the same after Waters left the group.
One-Off Reunions
However, Pink Floyd did perform with Waters a couple of times after he left the band. For the first time in over 20 years, the classic lineup reunited to perform at the Live 8 benefit concert in 2005. It gave fans the impression that more concerts or tours could follow but that only happened once.
Three members of Pink Floyd reunited in 2013 to play a few songs at a charity event aimed at helping to gather funds for the victims of the Nepal earthquake. This event showed that only the second time and in the claim period starting from 1981, those three key members of the band were able to perform on stage. However, it was also not part of a series that was programmed as a tour but was only a single show.
Gilmour Retirement
Lead guitarist and singer David Gilmour stopped performing on the road, largely in 2016. That year, he began the tour in support of the album Rattle That Lock, which he said would be his last tour. If Gilmour is not ready to tour, it makes a Pink Floyd tour nearly out of the question. Gilmour seems content to take on other personal projects and crusades rather than touring packed stadiums across the globe as a member of Pink Floyd.
Waters is still touring solo.
Although David Gilmour has recently stopped performing live shows, Roger Waters has not. Waters still performs world tours with an emphasis on performing Pink Floyd albums in their entirety live to this date. His most recent performance was the This Is Not A Drill Tour, which featured his solo material. However, it included sections with interpretations of Pink Floyd albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall.
Although many fans have been able to see Roger Waters perform live in recent years, it is still somewhat satisfying for them to be able to see these Pink Floyd albums played live by one of the founding members of the band. However, it does not include important band members such as Gilmour, and it omits other valuable input that he could offer. This is actually a bad idea because the chemistry of all the members collaborating together gets lost.
There is no planned reunion Yet
Taking all of this into consideration, it is safe to say that Pink Floyd is not in any hurry to get back together and go on a concert tour. As of 2020, Nick Mason admitted to not having communicated with Roger Waters for more than 5 years. An addition, the relationship between Waters and Gilmour never recovered, even though they were part of Pink Floyd band. When there are open issues between individuals and they have not settled their scores from previous disagreements, it may not be easy to work together.
Moreover, David Gilmour has remained very clear that he does not want to be involved in any more significant tours. Perhaps, someday in the distant future, there can be one or two performances for a special occasion or a limited number of performances in some city celebrating Pink Floyd. However, all the indications suggest that this is no longer a possibility, as there is no way there will be a Pink Floyd tour again, even with the presence of the founding member Wright dead and Gilmour off touring.
Can Pink Floyd Ever Reunite and Perform Again?
Although a general Pink Floyd tour around the world is not possible, fans should perhaps be allowed some chance to experience at least two or more core members of the band in the future. Some people claimed that Gilmour and Mason could perform at a live concert or on a single event only. Waters also did not exclude the possibility that he may be able to perform again on stage with his former band members.
It also raises the likelihood that, as the members age, they might like to cash in once more from a series of Shows to honor Pink Floyd’s music. But individual excursions, it appears, will be unattainable. Consequently, the reunions that will occur will only be short and extremely restricted in nature.
