Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, charmed his fans across the globe with his impressive vocal abilities, charming personality, and sleek dancing in the early fifties. However, in the mid-1970s, Elvis was gradually deteriorating health-wise from the effects of prescription drugs and disease associated with his wayward lifestyle. Elvis was a loyal man to his fans and remained active in his career, performing stage tours up until they eventually had to remove him from the stage.
Elvis's Final Tour Commenced in June 1977 and ended in June 1977.
Elvis started his final tour in June 1977. The tour was planned to be 20 dates within several weeks, in which concerts were to be held. After the recording session, his band members said that Elvis appeared to be eager to get back out on the road to entertain his fans once again.
The first date of the concert series was June 17, 1977, in Cincinnati, Ohio. There, Elvis and his party went through the mid-western and southern states visiting Dayton, Ohio, Louisville, Kentucky, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia. He gave several shows in some of them and everyone loved his Elvis Presley songs such as “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love. ”
Testimonies of audiences give the impression that Elvis was performing well even as his health state was unstable. Although he may not have had the raw energy and endurance of a performer that thrilled his audiences in earlier decades, he was still a substantial entertainer. Accompaniment singers became more prominent to support Elvis’s voice which was not as potent and strong as before.
What about the last stop on the tour
Touring was beginning to weigh on Elvis's physical form. Still, he was resolved to finish his final run of shows. The last scheduled stop for the 1977 summer tour was a five-show Indianapolis, Indiana.
The two scheduled events for Indianapolis happened in Market Square Arena on June 26, 1977. With their mix of rock, gospel, and romantic ballads, Elvis and his band delighted the audience. Unknown to the supporters, these events would be the last ones they could see Elvis for some considerable period. The scheduled 27th of June Indianapolis event would never take place.
This was the final time Elvis left the building, in more ways than one.
Elvis Presley died on the morning of August 16th, 1977 in his home popularly known as Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. Cardiac arrest due to abnormal heartbeat along with prescription drug use and other diseases such as glaucoma and constipation were listed as the cause of death. He was only 42 years old.
The sudden demise brought a lot of sorrow among millions of fans from across the globe. The emotional response to the sad news proved that listeners could be moved by Elvis Presley and his unique style of music. During the funeral and the final burial of Elvis, Memphis streets were filled with 50,000 fans to get a glimpse of the icon.
In retrospect, the June 1977 live performances were the final hurrah of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Even though his death was so untimely, considering his fate, one can only be comforted by his ability to endure the tough times near the end and continue to do what he most loved to do; performing lively concerts to his dedicated fan base. It is only fortunate that recordings were made from those last shows for us to see Elvis Presley as he was at his best. While the King may have bid his final goodbye to the building way back in 1977, his musical spirit will live on forever.
