Elvis Presley is considered the King of Rock and Roll and was famous for his wild stage performances. Following his arrival in the mid-‘50s with songs such as ”Heartbreak Hotel” and ”Hound Dog,” Elvis rose to become one of the most popular singers globally. His concert tours attracted massive traffic and made people all over the country eager to embrace the spirit of rock and roll.
Elvis performed in concerts virtually non-stop from 1956 until he died in 1977. While on the tour for those years he has done more than a thousand concerts with millions of people attending.
First National Tour 1956 His first national tour began in June 1956. He was hardly a household name outside the South at this time. It might also interest you that Elvis and his band moved about in a car giving almost nightly performances in small theaters and civic auditoriums. This tour made it easier for Elvis to reach other markets and get exposure to national newspapers.
By the end of 1956, Elvis was already becoming a phenomenon and people rioted during some of his concerts. His sex appeal and energy were off the hook, he loved the crowd and got them going completely. However, the year that followed was still filled with tours, and Elvis repeated them almost in every region of the United States.
Comeback Special 1968 When Elvis was drafted into the army in 1958, he devoted his time to movie-making when he was discharged in 1960. He performed in fewer concerts during this period even though he was still very popular.
In late 1968 Elvis made his appearance in a major NBC comeback special to return to singing. To further this critically acclaimed television event, Elvis began his first concert tour in 1961.
Between July and August 1969, Elvis performed sold-out concerts in Las Vegas and then followed through with other dates in different cities. These live performances in 1969 proved that Elvis had not forgotten his ability to rock as well and established him for a comeback which he began in his 1968 television special.
Las Vegas Concerts 1969-1976 Elvis started a concert residency at the International Hotel in Las Vegas in 1969 making concert performances of approximately four weeks, twice yearly. Elvis was very comfortable in the showroom environment of the stage and became known for his charismatically charged and long drawn-out performances.
Although touring across the nation less often during the Vegas years, when Elvis got back on the road again to perform concerts in the early 70s, he was still packing the halls. Nevertheless, some of the critics complained that his behaviors on the stage were rather random and believed that the quality of his voice was not as good as before.
Elvis Presley was still performing in Las Vegas in December 1976, seven months before he died. These last passionate and physically demanding performances exposed Elvis to a state where he was ill and addicted to prescription drugs, which would claim his life at the early age of 42.
Aloha from Hawaii 1973 During Elvis’s happy time touring in Las Vegas, he gave a one-off concert, which was transmitted live via satellite around the world in 1973 and entitled “Aloha from Hawaii. ” The concert was watched by more than 40 countries and had the highest TV viewership to date.
This performance captures Elvis at the pinnacle of his talent – he was young but more confident with the repertoire added to his set from his time at the International in Las Vegas. The Aloha concert also proved that Elvis was able to entertain his audience whether in a live concert or a televised one.
Touring in the Mid-70s After his historic global telecast from Hawaii in 73 Elvis went on two successive major North American tours in the mid-seventies to towns which he had not visited for nearly twenty years.
He sang in venues such as Knoxville, Tennessee, the place where he recorded his first singles at Sun Studio in 1954. As for the other shows, it was the opportunity to have intimate contact with the fans in venues of a smaller capacity. And these mid-decade tours continued to bring Elvis’s concert tally closer to the magic mark of 1000+.
Final Tour 1977 Following a couple of years of no touring, Elvis began what would turn out to be his last tour in June 1977. It focused mainly on the Southern States Part Once again as with his previous Vegas shows Elvis had put on some weight and was increasingly dependent on prescription drugs these began to show in his performances as well.
However, the audience continued to flock to witness Elvis's live performances, even though the signs of his deteriorating health were quite evident. Elvis was only able to perform some concert commitments in Memphis and Cincinnati before he died of heart failure in his Graceland home in August.
However, it is impossible to name a certain tour that could describe the concert career of Elvis which spanned over two decades. When he was not making movies, Elvis was on tour and performing in small clubs large halls, and stadiums. Very few major artists have been able to tour as frequently as Elvis was doing in live shows throughout his rather short life. Claiming to be the biggest entertainer ever, he has more than numbers on the chart, but hours entertaining fascinating audiences on stage.
