The English Beat to Tour North America in 2023
Legendary British ska icons The English Beat reveal they will be touring North America in the Spring of 2023 with 24 dates. The tour is scheduled to commence in Santa Ana California on March 1st then traverse the Western half of the United States before proceeding East. Some of the major stops are the shows in Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Toronto, Boston New York City, and Washington DC. As of now, the tour is expected to come to an end on the 15th of April in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Originally from Birmingham, England, The English Beat was formed in 1978 and has the original vocalist Dave Wakeling backed by a great band. The English Beat is one of the most successful bands associated with the ska revival movement of 2 Tone in the late 1970s and early 1980s. With bands like The Specials, Madness, and The Selecter they contributed to the development of the distinctive 2 Tone sound featuring Jamaican ska, reggae, pop, and punk rock. In their first incarnation from 1978-1983, The English Beat had recorded three albums as well as several hits before disbanding in 1983.
When The English Beat disbanded, Dave Wakeling went on to form General Public while Andy Cox and David Steele formed the Fine Young Cannibals. Both of those bands continued to experience success during the mid to late 1980s. Wakeling refounded The English Beat in the early nineties and continues to be active recording and performing under this moniker to the present day. The current members include Wakeling on lead vocal and Adam Birch on guitar, Mat Morish on SAX and Brad Engstrom playing bass, Nucci Cantrell on drums, and Jesse Molloy on keyboards.
The next tour in 2023 will allow the audience to repeat the familiar hits of The English Beat in the style of ska-pop such as “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Save It for Later,” “I Confess,” “Hands Off She’s Mine”, and “Can’t Get Used to Losing You. ” Of course, fan-favorite tracks from Wakeling’s solo albums will also be performed, as well as some cover songs and unexpected compositions.
Moreover, The English Beat will tour Australia in November and December Moreover, The English Beat has recently revealed its Spring tour dates. 2022 has seen the band getting right back out on the road after the pandemic with more live shows across the UK and Europe in the summer.
In an interview with Wakeling, he confirms that they are eager to get back to the United States after being inactive for the past two years. “It is something like this that makes me happy to be performing and making new friends and fans all over the USA,” he added. “In the last few years, it’s been impossible not to feel a bit isolated and disconnected from everything. Our American fans always know how to have a good time at the Beatles. Their energy charges us up. We feed off of that energy. I can’t wait!!”
The upcoming tour should be of interest to fans of The English Beat who remember seeing the band in the early 80s as well as new generations of ska enthusiasts who have been enjoying third-wave ska revival such as The Interrupters, Hepcat, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones which have been dominating festival stage in the recent years. The soulful toot in combination with the English Beat’s pop tunes and politically charged lyrics are as appealing in the year 2023 as they were in 1982.
Since Dave Wakeling is an energetic frontman, and the current lineup of The English Beat is a group of talented musicians, the 2023 tour will be a spirited show throughout. Regardless of where and how often the band tours through the United States to both the large metropolises and the small clubs, they are sure to stir up the spirits of 2 Tone history while proving that they are fully capable musicians in the present.
