Clearly among the most well-known and cherished hard rock bands in the annals of music is Fleetwood Mac. Though their membership has changed throughout the years, Fleetwood Mac was founded in 1967 and their stage performances are renowned. Their music has endured. Still, Fleetwood Mac kept their on and off-stage relationship going well, particularly in the seventies crowned with singles like "Rhiannon" and "Dreams." Still, things changed in the eighties when the band members started independent careers. Reformed in 1997 for The Dance tour, the band was both commercially and critically successful. This was the most recent tour with the classic lineup finished in 2013–2014 for On With the Show, but the band shockingly left and then came back in 2018.
The band's 2018–2019 concert tour traced the reunion with former singer and keyboard player Christine McVie. Following The Dance tour, she left Fleetwood Mac in 1998; the surviving band members were Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood. Christine's music was no more, but the band stayed busy for the next twenty years traveling and putting records out. That was not the case, yet early in 2018, it came to light that Lindsey Buckingham was leaving Fleetwood Mac before a forthcoming tour for unknown reasons. Before his death, Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House stepped in to complete the album; it was the final recorded music he created.
However, the internal turmoil did not reflect on the stage as Fleetwood Mac went on the An Evening with Fleetwood Mac tour in October 2018. The set list was an intelligent mix of songs that fans expected, such as ‘Gypsy’, ‘Little Lies’, and ‘Go Your Way’. Of course, Stevie Nicks twirl was in tack for hits such as “Rhiannon” and “Gold Dust Woman”. The most memorable for many was the return of the singer and keyboardist Christine McVie who was absent from the band for 20 years and sang absolute hit songs such as ‘Everywhere,’ ‘You Make Loving Fun,’ and the band’s anthem ‘Don’t Stop. ’
The tour continued across North America up to early April 2019 before moving to Europe for some festival and arena shows in June 2019. Critics applauded how the band members share a musical rapport and how Campbell and Finn were easily integrated into the group. As could be expected, tickets were a hot commodity wherever the Fleetwood Mac band went. It came to an end on November 3, 2019, making it one of the most successful concert tours of the year. More than fifty shows were generating revenue of over $100 million.
Now, there are multiple generations of fans who go and watch Fleetwood Mac perform live, which just goes to show how timeless and fun the band is. Boomers can sing to their heart’s content to early hits like ‘The Chain’ and ‘Dreams’ while Gen X and millennials can belt to some of the hits from the eighties such as ‘Little Lies’ and ‘Everywhere’. Given the successful outcome of the 2018-2019 venture, further tours appear eminently possible if conditions are favorable. The rumors of a classic lineup reunion also did not leave Fleetwood Mac and constantly followed the band. Christine McVie has suggested that she would be willing to go on tour again soon, so fans remain keenly observing for any sign of reunion discussions.
Whether the band decides to give another spin with Campbell and Finn or to call Buckingham who can be considered the band’s workhorse, Fleetwood Mac has shown time and again their unparalleled capability of delivering amazing live sets year after year. Each tour presents a million-dollar production value, countless songs with unlimited replays, and the magic of Fleetwood Mac. Here’s looking forward to North American fans not having to wait too long for Fleetwood Mac to come back to city arenas and amphitheaters. Based on the number of songs performed and their endurance across 50-plus shows in the 2018-2019 period Mac can still mount memorable concerts with over two-hour sets that encapsulate much of the band's greatest hits. Watch now, Fleetwood Mac enthusiasts – this will not be the next time this legendary band goes on tour, and when they do, there will be high demand for great seats no matter who is in the band. Yes, Fleetwood Mac has been around since the blues heyday, but they’re still able to sell out arenas and create timeless music.
