His concerts during his trilogy tour seem to be a grandiose affair with each concert running for several hours and featuring his biggest hits spanning his 12-year musical journey. Unfortunately set times have not been released yet, however, looking at setlists and reviews of previous tours helps fans gauge what they should realistically expect the show to last when Ed starts the North American leg on May 6 in Arlington Texas.
As with the name of the tour, he will be using songs from all three albums he released since he went solo, i.e... “., “x”, and ÷, or “Mathematics” tour as it is popularly called; with six records albums and over 150 songs in his kitty so far, he has offered a colossal number of songs in his performances with setlists that contain almost two dozen tracks running for over two hours Given that he has only been adding more albums to the list since his record-breaking Divide Tour concluded in 2019, a similarly mammoth set can be expected for Mathematics.
On the same note, when Divide was initiated in 2017, Sheeran was hardly performing shows that lasted for two hours and fifteen minutes. On that tour, he had this big looping pedal rig and was essentially a one-man band trying to replicate the kind of layered sound he does in the studio. Throughout the night, he’d weave intricate stories of immeasurable love, rustic roadhouse blues, polished pop, irresistible hip-hop, and everything in between into a cohesive whole. Audiences can expect Trilogy to have a similar format due to the production specifications demanding a lot of stage space for Ed and his guitars, pedalboards, and microphones.
But what would the breakdown look like in terms of the music? The show is sure to start with the bouncy energy of the new single ‘The Joker and the Queen’ followed by one of the usual go-to openers such as ‘Castle on the Hill. ’ Further incontestable crowd favorites guarantee stadium-wide chorusing like the romantic ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ the nostalgic ‘Photograph,’ the empowering ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You,’ or the universally appealing ‘I’m A Mess’ and ‘
Besides originals, which are themselves a treat, part of the thrill is what Ed will choose to grace the audience with on any particular evening. His discography list resembles an encyclopedia of the greatest hits of the last half a century and he has covered such songs as the Backstreet Boys’ “Shape of My Heart”, Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time”, and the 80’s favorite “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by the Proclaimers. Ed’s elastic vocals which are as flexible as rubber enable him to switch between different eras and genres for the fans’ favorite throwback segment.
But at the beating heart, Trilogy is going to be an opportunity for audiences to touch the raw passion of Ed as a peerless singer through the triumph and pain that is woven in his lyrics. From the ecstatic joy of new love on “Tenerife Sea” to the sorrow of lost youth on “Afire Love”, Sheeran’s perceptive personal narratives encapsulate and connect with audiences through shared nostalgia. With the seeming deterioration of pop music into a mere product of an assembly line, seeing Ed perform his mostly homemade songs to perfection and exude passion for his work is a refreshing reminder of the golden age of 70’s singer-songwriters.
Given prior tour durations, plus the number of hits Ed has accrued that deserve their life due, fans are in for even at a conservative estimate with an additional encore or two thrown in, fans should be in for over two hours of Ed strutting and preening across the stadium stage with arguably pop music’s most impressive one-man show. This is because every concert in the Mathematics Tour will be ending with a kind of collective release that speaks more than any language and brings about the most profound form of understanding. Even just the casual viewer will come out as a neophyte of his compositional brilliance. Hence, the buyers should be prepared for a long session and should be willing to scream as they are made to overpower themselves with joy! This is probably the only time in Ed’s soaring career that one gets to sit back and be treated to the complete overview of his unparalleled song list – so don’t make many trips to the washroom and be sure to be back on your seat in time to catch all the sprinkling of musical fairy dust.
