Korn is an American nu-metal band that originated in Bakersfield, California in the year 1993. They are most famous for being the pioneers of the nu-metal subgenre of metal music and taking it to the masses. Korn’s discography consists of 14 studio albums, 2 live albums, 3 compilation albums, 2 remix albums, and 39 singles. They have sold more than thirty-five million album copies globally.
Korn had been off the road for four years and they came back in style; the band began a massive North American tour in 2022. The tour began on March 4th in Springfield, Missouri, and is scheduled to end on April 17th in Somerset, Wisconsin. The total calendar of performances is 26 shows that will take place in arenas and amphitheaters in the United States and Canada.
This tour is called the “Korn 2022 Tour” and supports the group’s latest studio album titled Requiem which came out on February 4, 2022. This is their 14th studio album and it marks the band’s progression back to heavier sound and more emphasis on guitars which the fans have been longing for. Some songs from Requiem are included in the current tour setlist in addition to songs from throughout the band’s career and fans’ favorites.
Korn is being accompanied on the North American tour by Chevelle, an alternative metal band, as well as Code Orange, an indie rock band. The plurality of supporting bands proves Korn’s impact on different subgenres of heavy music and generations of bands and audiences. Jonathan Davis from Korn said “We’re excited to hit the road with Chevelle and Code Orange! Get ready for a night of moshing!”
Ticket sales for the Korn 2022 tour have been massive in every market leading to the tour. Most of the shows went up for pre-sale and all the tickets went out within minutes while the remaining tickets were sold once the general public sales began. Not a shock to most insiders, given the intensity of Korn’s fan base around the world, this immediate sellout reinforces the band’s appeal.
But aside from the NA tour, there are some European festival dates set for this summer including Rock Am Ring, Rock IM Park in Germany, and Download Festival in the UK in June. Greater European and International touring is likely to be revealed shortly since the band will be touring in support of the Requiem album internationally.
Thus, Korn’s return to the stage remains high in the expectations of millions of fans as well as music critics and journalists. Since the force and energy of live performances are some of the key factors that define Korn and attract fans, the concerts and festivals in 2022 are a great comeback for this legendary group. There are very few bands that would be able to compare with Korn when it comes to the ability to give a loud, aggressive, and passionate show every night.
The initial reception of the Korn 2022 tour opening nights has been warm with heaps of praise directed at the band’s intensity. The 26-song setlist consists mostly of the band’s greatest hits including “Freak on a Leash”, “Here to Stay” and “Fall Into Pieces”, along with newer songs such as “Start the Healing”, “Lost in the Grandeur” and the title track from the album Requiem. Kerrang, a well-renowned music magazine, was given the chance to review the opening night, and the score they gave was 5 out of 5.
Korn is touring around North America in a tour bus with artwork and graphics on the outside promoting the Requiem album. Bus traveling from city to city is more sustainable and environmentally friendly than flying alone or chartering a plane, and it also helps the band to maintain their family and well-being during intensive touring. Some bands have noted that extended time in tour buses enhances communication, group cohesion, and in effect the performances.
Jonathon Davis remains to be one of the most memorable frontmen in the history of metal with his bagpipes, dreads, and ease in switching between growling and singing. For the rhythm section, guitarists James “Munky” Schaffer and Brian “Head” Welch provide a powerful low end with their detuned seven and eight-string guitar work. Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu has taken a brief leave that has to do with personal issues like mental instability but for now on stage Korn is being backed by a former touring member, Roberto “Ra” Diaz. Last but not least, Ray Luzier is a drummer and one of the most appreciated players in the metal scene.
It is quite fitting that the band returns to extensive touring and more shows in a relatively short span as part of Korn’s long career. As the band has now released 14 albums, and it has been almost three decades since the band first emerged, some fans may have expected the band to either start playing fewer shows or even embark on a farewell tour like so many of their peers. But it seems that after this intensive North American tour, Korn is far from being tired and ready to deliver more aggressive music for dedicated fans across the globe with a tight schedule.
Because of the extensive tour routing it can be expected that Korn will come up with more trek legs in the later part of 2022 and beyond. There are rumors that the band may tour Europe, South America, and even Asia/Australia to promote the well-received Requiem album as widely as possible. There have also been suggestions that Korn may get back to the studio to start working on ideas for another album if they are inspired while on tour again.
However, one thing is for sure, Korn is back, and they are back with a vengeance! This legendary band inspired a whole generation of lost and directionless youth, who found solace in being outcasts. This loud, heavy yet fragile sound was the medium through which millions of fans could let out their rage, sorrow, and frustration. Almost three decades later Korn still wears the crown and remains the undisputed king of Nu metal ground. Thus, by going back to the road the band has once again gathered the true followers, the old and the new ones, to come together and rejoice in the victory and the years of Korn!
