When Will It Finally Happen?
Maxwell is an acclaimed R&B artist who has not been on tour for more than 5 years. The final concert series in support of this album was BLACKsummers’night, which was released to support his 2009 album of the same name. The album that was released began a planned series of three records; the second being blackSUMMERS’night in 2016. However, the third and final album is still yet to be seen. Fans have been patiently yet eagerly waiting for the new music and especially the opportunity to watch Maxwell perform live again. So when is his much-awaited concert tour ever going to start?
During interviews in 2016, Maxwell mentioned that the blacksummers’night trilogy’s final record would be released in 2017. But as for the new songs, the mysterious singer did not release anything in 2017. Maxwell celebrated his twenty years in the music industry in 2018 since his first album, Urban Hang Suite. It appeared as if Maxwell was going to do what any celebrity would do to revel with fans – drop new music and announce a tour.
Speaking to Rolling Stone in December 2018, Maxwell declared that he intended to put out the third album and go on tour in 2019. Audiences were thrilled to hear this long-awaited piece of information. People eagerly awaiting its airing wanted to know when they could book the tickets and whether Maxwell would be performing in their city or not. There were even promotional photos and videos of Maxwell at work in the recording studio.
However, similar to what happened in 2018, there was no new album or tour from Maxwell as the year closed. Subsequent interviews have been either non-existent or quite unclear about his future in music. The R&B crooner has been known to do things at his pace by taking long breaks between the release of his albums and tours. The insider said: ‘Maxwell is popular and even the most avid fan has been getting impatient waiting for him to perform again.
There was a brief moment in early year 2020 when a summer tour may be possible in celebration of the album’s tenth anniversary. However, any possibility of concerts in the year 2020 was shocked to be terminated by the outbreak of the coronavirus across the world. Almost all musicians stopped touring as lockdowns and restrictions on the number of attendees were put in place. Maxwell and his management did not make any statement for most of the year 2020 and early 2021 when the world was learning to live with the new norm.
Maxwell suggested in September 2021 on his social media platforms that he had returned to the recording studio. Could this mean that the much anticipated fourth and final album was finally on the production line? Fans certainly hoped so! Speculations on music forums indicated that Maxwell would perform a massive global tour in 2022 to compensate for the pandemic’s loss.
However, with occasional Instagram stories in early 2022 appearing to show Maxwell recording new music, there has been no official word or tour dates. He has also done one-off performances here and there, such as at a concert in honor of Aaliyah, the deceased singer, in August 2022. However, these only teased fans for an actual full-blown Maxwell tour than ever before!
As of now in the middle of the year 2022, it is still uncertain when Maxwell will be able to go back on stage for a longer concert tour. He may be holding off until the third album in the black summer night series is out to go on tour. It could be that he feels at ease only when he shares new songs and not his old songs or popular hits. However, after over 5 years without an official live tour, fans are willing to see Maxwell perform new or old songs.
It is evident that Maxwell is an independent character and continues to be rather mysterious to his followers. Due to his ability to wait for years between albums and tours, his fans have learned to be patient with him. However, some still keep their fingers crossed and await Maxwell to release a worldwide concert tour in 2023 – or, at least, in accompaniment with a fresh album.
In essence, whenever Maxwell is prepared to tour again, fans are certain to buy tickets and help sell out concerts worldwide. His voice is unique and the sexy rhythm & blues is forever, new music or not. Loyal enthusiasts will continue to follow Maxwell’s social media pages and music blogs, eagerly awaiting a tour announcement. But they should not expect details on when, or they may turn blue! Maxwell will tour when Maxwell is ready…and not a moment sooner. ”
