Santana, the rock band formed by guitarist Carlos Santana, has performed on the road since the group originated in the late ’60s. They may not tour as frequently as they used to in the '70s and '80s, but Santana does play live now and then to share their fusion of rock en español, Latin jazz, and world music with the audience.
The last tour of Santana’s was from early June to late July 2022. The tour was launched in Europe with performances in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Some memories were of scale shows such as the Sweden Rock Festival and TW Classic in Belgium, which draws tens of thousands of people.
Santana then took the tour back to Europe before heading back to the United States for a series of summer shows. These shows saw them perform on stage in Clarkston, MI; Cuyahoga Falls, OH; Tinley Park, IL; and other locations. Notably, the band was able to perform two special concerts with Earth, Wind, and Fire in the Miraculous Supernatural 2022 Tour.
The summer 2022 tour includes the current lineup of Santana, which means there are some members from early seventies Santana plus some new members. Of course, the legendary Carlos Santana also performed with his guitar sounds and Latin American flares. With him were several Santana members since the beginning of the band including Cindy Blackman Santana on drums, Tony Lindsay on vocals, and Benny Rietveld on keyboards/ vocals. New members for instance the bass guitar player David K. Mathews helped rejuvenate the group.
Every single concert of the band in 2022 included both popular tracks that have been performed for decades such as ‘Black Magic Woman’ and ‘Oye Como Va’ as well as new songs to tour, including ‘Smooth,’ or songs from the Supernatural album. There was also space left for Santana to engage in longer improvisations and solos that showcased his virtuosic guitar skills.
While off the stage, Carlos and the band ensured they interacted with the local media and participated in tour publicity appearances in the markets. Most recently, Santana has focused on social issues, staging concerts for registering voters, and raising awareness of Native American issues. Such a social awareness and desire to work collectively have always been part of Santana’s DNA as a band throughout the years.
In the course of the summer 2022 dates that were being featured, there was no sign that Santana was planning on taking a break any soon. One may anticipate the inclusion of more regional US shows in addition to the shows at festivals in various countries in the forthcoming years of 2023. Although Santana might not undertake as many long world tours as they used to in the early seventies, because they are music icons, they will always be in demand and can perform their unique blend of music across countries.
Since leader Carlos Santana still seems to have the drive to continue to play up to the age of 76 years, the guitarist has decided to stick to studio recordings and world tours as long as his health allows.
