Taylor Swift is a global phenomenon and has one of the most dedicated fan bases, known as Swifties, who are always ready to support her records and albums, which have topped the charts several times in her nearly 20-year career. After the massive Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018, in 2022 Swift unveiled her tenth studio album titled Midnights as well as the Eras Tour, her first tour in five years. As fans eagerly wait for Taylor Swift to grace the stage again during the Eras Tour, there are questions regarding the live show being captured for later streaming or broadcasting.
As elusive as Swift and her team have been about specific strategies, some signs suggest a concert film might be released in 2023 or 2024. After being the opening act on the Burnin’ Up Tour for the Jonas Brothers, Swift released a Jonas Brothers Live Concert Experience in 2009. She went on to record successful movies after her Speak Now World Tour, Red Tour, and 1989 World Tour were made available for theaters and streaming services.
The last concert film to her date is the Reputation Stadium Tour of 2018 released on Netflix where she gives a behind-the-scenes look at her pyro-infused and intricately choreographed performance drawing the curtain on her record-breaking stadium tour. The movie was warmly received by Taylors fans and was hailed for showing realistic and intimate scenes from the singers life during the time of her public turmoil. Considering the level of anticipation that fans have had for the film based on the Reputation Stadium Tour, expectations have been that Swift would follow a similar trend with a film that captures her return to touring after being off-stage for several years.
Thus, when might the Eras Tour film possibly come out? No official announcement has been made yet, however, Swift has been known to release her tour films around a year after the tour has ended. If this trend is to persist, fans should reasonably be prepared for an Eras Tour documentary feature film sometime in mid to late 2024. The Eras Tour has been planned to begin on the 17th of March, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, and will continue until August, where it will conclude with five shows in Los Angeles. Barring any disruptions such as a pandemic or other events that would make the dates unsustainable, the tour would then come to an end in early August 2024. Using the standard timeline that Swift follows for her tours, this would mean that the concert film release could be expected around late summer or early fall of 2024.
Where the film may ultimately end up premiering is also unknown, but it is not unprecedented to study. All of her last three concert films were co-produced with streaming behemoth Netflix, which has become the premier streaming service for large-scale concerts. It would seem that continuing her partnership with Netflix is a rather obvious course of action, and, of course, Netflix would eagerly agree as well for the chance to bring another Taylor Swift hit to its millions of subscribers worldwide. However, it is also important to note that after a public dispute with her former record label Big Machine Records, Swift is now contracted under Universal Music Group and its affiliated labels. Universal also has streaming through Peacock. As Universal agreed to increase its partnership with Swift, she may take a different approach to film distribution as Netflix appears to be a no-brainer.
Specific information about the Eras Tour film is still a mystery, however, fans have learned that their dedication and waiting will be compensated in some way at some point. Going by Swift’s previous touring timelines, fans might stand to witness an emotional, glittery tour on record in mid-to-late 2024 as part of a concert documentary of her first tour in five years. For a singer who still hits new milestones after over 15 years of touring, the Eras Tour film will show fans the next phase of Swift’s career.
