The Cult released details of the North American tour
English-American rock band The Cult has unveiled a new North American tour in promotion of their latest album, Under the Midnight Sun. It begins in late April and ends in August when it will be visiting its various destinations in the US and Canada.
Originally called The Cult, the group started in 1983 and gained popularity in the late eighties and early nineties with such albums Love, Electric, and Sonic Temple. Now regarded as one of the giants of the alternative rock movement, lead singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy have survived the highs and lows over the last forty years.
The Cult returned in 2016 with the critically praised Hidden City CD, having been quiet for a few years. The band has kept on being active since then, recorded two further albums, and toured much more. Released in October 2022, Under the Midnight Sun is among the most potent albums the band has ever produced since its mid-2000s reunion.
Both old and fresh Under the Midnight Sun songs will be on the next tour. Astbury highlighted in the statement, "We are eager to perform new songs from Under the Midnight Sun; we have a lot to express." Duffy remarked, "I have devoted my life to the Cult; we are hand in glove.”
Set to start on April 25, in San Diego, California, this almost 30-date North American leg of The Cult's global tour will After their West Coast tour around mid-May, The Cult will be off for two weeks before returning with performances in the Midwest. From there, they will go to big cities such as Washington in June and the first part of July including New York and Atlanta.
Starting on July 12 with gigs in Canada, it gradually declines until The Cult returns to the West Coast. Showing in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, they will be finishing the North American portion in mid-August. Later legs of the trip will go to Latin America Europe and other parts of 2023.
Astbury revealed how he and Duffy developed, overcame challenges, and emerged stronger throughout the four decades of their musical career as he announced the tour. "The relationship that I and Billy have always been tricky but the last six years we have been close," he remarked. "We always have friends' backs, hence nobody is ever going to tamper with any of us.”
That unpredictability may have fuelled the fire that enabled The Cult to be such a strong live band. Should audiences witness this tour, they can expect the band's intense performance and raw energy. From indie to glam, hard rock, psych, and beyond, the setlist will also reflect every phase of the band. It is The Cult's view on their 10 studio album body of work.
Original bassist Jamie Stewart, who returned to the band 39 years apart, is also on the roster for this tour. Stewart said, "I am over the moon to be back with The Cult." Drummer John Tempesta also remains whole for this run.
The Cult also always gives great attention to the visual side of their presentations. Astbury said the new trip will be the same, alternating between light and dark. "The stage is designed as a postmodern, urban setting with light boxes and scaffolding against what he refers to as rock n roll black back line," says he.
Though the tour is billed as The Cult North American Tour 2023, the name of the event can change over its course. "We have not formally named it," Astbury said. "Many tours are now branded so they want to create an experience name as they run the show daily.”
One thing is for sure: The Cult and its supporters have a mutual co-dependency; so, audiences should be ready to have 100% out of the band at every venue. Duffy defines "The Cult as also a dialogue between us and the audience – an audience just as diverse as my guitars."
