Weird Al Yankovic has just released his concert schedule for the year 2022.
Parodist and musical comedian Weird Al Yankovic has recently revealed plans for a large-scale concert tour in 2022, something that the audience hasn’t seen in quite a while. The “Weird Al Yankovic Live 2022” will start on April 23 at Poughkeepsie, New York, and then progress to other cities in North America through to October 29 when it will end in St. Petersburg, Florida. All in all, over a hundred and thirty shows that Yankovic has lined up for him, which will see him perform in venues all over the United States and Canada.
When Yankovic last went on a major concert tour, it was in support of his album Mandatory Fun back in 2014. That album was his last album that can be classified as a traditional album release in a career that has already spanned nearly 40 years in the music industry. Although he still occasionally drops tracks sporadically like the Chainsmokers and Imagine Dragons parody songs he recently released, there is no word on when he will release another full studio album. Nevertheless, Yankovic has continued to perform as enthusiastically as he did in his early years, and the fans who discovered him in the early 80s still embrace him.
This latest tour is as expected to be as crazy, energetic, and utterly random as all of Weird Al’s past performances. Fans will get everything from caricature imitations of other artists’ chart-topping hits of the moment as well as zany compositions, little-known individual tracks, dressing up, film clips, and wise references to pop phenomena of the respective years of his activity. Staple live songs fans might expect to see are faster versions of Beat It, angry-sounding Smells Like Teen Spirit, food-related songs Eat It and Fat, and last but not least, The Saga Begins.
Of course, every Weird Al show contains the classics, but he also has to come up with local preferences or audience requests on the spot. He likes to switch up the arrangements and the songs and this is quite evident when he is performing on different nights and the audience is the same. As there is no new album to actively pump in 2022, the chances of some random songs being performed grow significantly on this tour.
Although Yankovic usually has an accompanying band with him to replicate the layered recording arrangements, which are usually complex, he has been known to do pared-down arrangements and multiple song mash-ups. This enables him to pack even more songs from his entire discography into each show. Some speculation suggests that this tour may employ a little of both strategies.
Today, the curly-haired singer is 62 and he does not plan to stop writing humorous songs or performing electrifying concerts. There are people of all ages attending Weird Al concerts, whether they discovered him through 80s MTV and radio, or YouTube. That gives his shows that special intergenerational quality; whether you are a fan who has listened to all the albums or are like me, you know only ‘Eat It’ and ‘Amish Paradise’, everyone leaves the show satisfied.
Although Al undoubtedly commits to the performance aspect by using costumes and props as well as assuming different roles for the night, fans claim that he never becomes fake or distanced from the audience. Tickets are already available for many cities and dates, although high early demand indicates nothing less than a swift sellout once all shows are officially released this month.
Do not turn your back on guaranteed laughs, good music, enthusiastic fans, and of course, the comedian par excellence, Weird Al. For Yankovic, these shifts in the genres and the preferences of each musical generation are irrelevant because he has already been recognized as an icon. He will be celebrated among other great American satirists and comedians of the 20th and 21st centuries.
